The Pursuit of Happiness

  1. The Pursuit of Happyness

The drama “The Pursuit of Happyness“ is set in San Francisco in 1981.The movie is based on a true story and is about Chris Gardner, a single fatherwho‘s played by Will Smith. The salesmen takes care of his son Christopher Gardner jun. , performed by Jaden Smith.

Chris Gardner tries to sell bone-density scanners to doctors. But this turns out to be a money-losing business, which automatically leads to their bust. As a result his wife Linda leaves them. One day Chris randomly meets a manager, who works for Dean Witter and this relationship enables him to become a stockbroker by undergoing a hard, unpaid internship, which only 1 out of 20 people succeed and is offered a job. Besides that he‘s struggling with homelessness because he can‘t pay taxes and a motel after he and his son are thrown out of their last flat. So sometimes they are forced to spend the night in toiletts of a subway station and in shelter provided by a local church. His ambition makes him improve at his internship and he become the best of all applicants. The managers offer him a job as a stockbroker. In 2006 he has his own multi-million firm.

Focusing on the background music, I can say that the producers of the movie use it to intesify the effect of the situation. So whenever there is an achievement or a successful result, they just played music that brightens up the mood like in the scene when Chris Gardner gets the offer to work as a stockbroker. On the other hand, we‘ve got the sad scenes. Slow background music is chosen to make it look even worse.

The next aspect I want to discuss is the varied lights. This actually works and has the same effect as shown in paragraph above (background music). The film makers darken the places deliberately, whenever Chris Gardner‘s low living conditions are shown, like at home or at the shelter provided by the church. On the other side they brighten the places with light he goes to work, like at his internship because everything there seems to be valuable and well-organized.

In my opinion, The Pursuit of Happyness deserves 10 out of 10 points. This movie is extremely touching.People aren‘t aware of the situation some people live in. The movie opens you eyes and makes you realize that just everything you want can be achieved. I think ‘where there‘s a will there‘s a way‘ is shown that in perfectly.Furthermore, this film contains a lot of motivational sentences and words. ‘Never give up‘ and ‘Don‘t ever let anybody tell you that you can‘t do something‘ are only two examples. That‘s exactly why I rated this movie this high!

  2. Stefan, you wrote a really good review! It's clearly structured and I like that you give quotations. So you make sure, that the reader understands your point of view. Obviously you've dealt with the movie and its subject.
And I totally agree with you: This movie is great and touches your heart. Especially the part, in which Chris managed their lifes though they did'n have anything. He always wanted his little son being happy.
And this is the film's topic: happiness!
A theme, which everybody is interested in. In my opinion, the movie handled this difficult theme in a really emotional way!
