Garden State

  1. The film “Garden State“ is set in New Jersey in 2004. The main actors are Zach Braff as Andrew Largeman, Natalie Portman as Sam and Peter Sarsgaard as Mark.
For the funeral of Andrew’s mother, Andrew visits his hometown in “the Garden State” New Jersey after a few years in Los Angeles. He is not sad about her death, because he had to take antidepressants since his ninth year. These antidepressants have been prescribed to him his father, who is a psychologist, because he thinks that Andrew is to blame for his mother being a paraplegic. However, Andrew leaves his antidepressants in L.A. and he starts to perceive the life around him again. He meets his old friend Mark, falls in love with Sam, and he talks with his father Gideon (Ian Holm), but his father is not only responsible for his antidepressants.
The photography is typical for movies, which are made in between 1990 and 2008. Clear pictures in the beginning, but fast scene changes at the turning point. The music in the background is chose very well, at the turning point, the music is building up tension.
The set design is very good, I think, because the pictures are very realistic and logical, what you can see at some scenes with the total view.
Overall, the film was made very well in his genre, that’s a film which is a “must”.

  2. Matthias, Adrew is actually still living in L.A.. He visits his hometown the first time since 9 years, when he moved to Los Angeles.’

You have to mention why he had to take antidepressants.
Therefore, you should explain the story with his mom, what happened and the connection to the antidepressants and how they affect.
Since his mom was very strict to him and never gave love back to Andrew, he got so frustrated that he kicked her. Consequently she hit the kitchen desk’s edge with her neck so that she got paraplegic.
His dad though that his boy had to much anger inside. That is the reason why he gave him antidepressants which make him emotionless.
It is actually not evident if the antidepressants or just the dislike of his mom are responsible for his apathy. I think both.

Why did you mention Mark? Is he important for the story? If yes, you should tell why. He not just meets Mark.

Where should the reader know Sam? She is actually one of the most important persons you should actually more describe.

I do not really get the connection between the talk with his dad and the antidepressants.
Who else should be responsible for the antidepressants?
They actually clear things up which went wrong in the past few years in that conversation.

As far as set design is concerned, you should maybe describe the landscape a little bit more.
Do you think the the scenes change fast at the turning point?

I agree that watching this film is a must, but you actually do not get an insight in this film the way you wrote your review!

  3. Matthias,
like the "anonymous" person has already said, your review is a little bit to short and only describes the plot inaccurately!
There are many important points missing! That's what the person above has already listed.
But in my opppinion you should also add the language used by the actors: They especially use "rude language" like "fuck off" or "shut up". That´s really conspicous!
But I agree that this movie is enjoyable! Sometimes a little bit confusing but all things considered it's worth watching it! :)
