The drama “Cloverfield“, which is set in New York in May 2009, is about six young adults. Jason, his girlfriend Lily, his brother Rob, Rob’s girlfriend Beth and Hud and Marlena, who are friends of them. During the going away party for Rob, there is an earthquake and a huge explosion because of which they have to leave Manhattan. While they are trying to leave the area, the ‘thing’ splits Brooklyn Bridge, across which they want to get away, and kills Jason. Rob gets a call from Beth, who still is in Midtown and cannot move. Rob wants to save her, even though the monster is there, too. None of the others is able to change his mind, so they come with him. As the streets are blocked with the police fighting the monster, they go through the subway tunnels, where they are attacked by small monsters, and Marlena gets bitten and dies. Lily, Rob and Hud arrive at Beth’s place and save her. But the ‘thing’ isn’t dead yet... A very interesting instrument of the film is the camera work, which is not like in a normal film because the characters themselves hold the camera. This makes the viewer feel even closer to the people in the film. However, as the characters are not professionals, this causes the picture to not always be perfect, for example, you sometimes do not see anything, and so you have no idea what is going on. The same device – a first-person view – means that there is no background music, which adds to the film’s realistic impression on the viewer. I personally like the film a lot although the story is not overly innovative, but I like the idea of seeing a small group throughout a catastrophe, trying to survive on their own and filming it all by themselves. The actors are relatively unknown but do a great job not only when panicking but also when making their way through all the dangers and staying reasonable nonetheless. I rate the film eight out of ten points due to the confusing camera.
In most aspects I need to agree with you karl but I would add the fact that Marlena doesn't die right after she is bitten, so they still get fetched up by some soldiers and are brought to the military hospital, where she actually dies by a mysterious infection she was infected with by the bite. Furthermore one soldier tells them about a flight to get out of the area, before he lets them leave the station. Well i personally would say that, the film is made that interesting by the camera, because the fact that the camera confuses the viewer sometimes makes it even more thrilling to him since you can't be sure what exactly happened, so you are always excited to get to know what exactly was going on. I really wouldn't rate the film lower cause of the camera, but for the story which is not really much different to quite a lot of others film out of the same genre. Well in the end I would rate the film the same as you did, eight out of ten, bur for different reasons like I explained above.
