The romantic drama "Slumdog Millionaire", by Danny Boyle appeared in the movie theatres in the year of 2008 and is based on the novel "Questions and Answers". The main character -Jamal- is played by Dev Patel. The film takes place in India, especially in one of Mumbai's slums.
18-year old boy Jamal, from the slums of Mumbai, a so called "slumdog", takes part in a quiz show called "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?", where you can win 20 million rupees. For presenter Prem Kumar, it seems impossible that a "slumdog" could answer the questions. Therefore he makes fun of Jamal and in an advertising break he even gives him a wrong answer. But Jamal realises the trap and chooses nevertheless the right answer. Now Prem is sure: Jamal is cheating. Before he can ask the last question, there is a sound which shows the end of the show. In front of the studio door the police is waiting for Jamal. After the policemen have tortured him, Jamal tells them why he knew the answers. You find out about Jamal's and his brother Salim's past in flashbacks. They grew up in a slum in India, meet Latika, a girl who has lost her parents, and you find out how they survived and managed their lives after their mother died. Each quiz question stands for a certain period of his life. And it's clear that Jamal doesn't only want the money: he also wants to find his great love, Latika, again. After hearing this story, the police officer is convinced, that Jamal isn't cheating and brings him to the studio. If you want to know if Jamal wins the money and finds Latika, you'll have to watch the film! I won't reveal it!
The main colours in the film are brown, black and grey. You find them especially in the slums. They represent the mood there, the every day fight to survive. So the colours reflect the persons' feelings and you can imagine their situation. The background music fits the scenes. There are many Bollywood aspects in the film and therefore there is a lot of typical music. You feel like being in India. I especially liked the ironic scenes in the film. For example, when Jamal is a child his brother lockes him into a toilet. So Jamal jumped into the shit-hole just to get an autograph of his idol.
In my opinon "Slumdog Millionaire" is a great movie, which makes you really enjoy it. It shows the cruel side of slum life without sparing a detail. First of all, I was quite shocked but it changed my point of view: I value life here in Europe more than before. I would give the film 9 out of 10 points. If you like emotional films which touch your heart, "Slumdog Millionaire" is the right film. Not for nothing it won 8 oscars. In my opinion it's worth watching this film!
You have done a good job on writing this review about the movie ‘Slumdog Millionaire‘. I like how you keep people in suspense by saying ‘I won‘t reveal it‘. This aspect somehow tempts readers to watch and to find out if Jamal will reply the final question and find his love Latika.
I totally agree with you Katia and your opinion. This movie contains a lot of moving scenes especially at the end. I got goose bumps and was deeply stirred by the living coditions and in generell the situation Jamal lived in when he was a child. It brings you back down on earth and makes you value the life here in europe as you‘ve mentioned. Furthermore I‘ve never seen a movie structured like this. To be more concret, the installed flashbacks makes ‘Slumdog Millionaire‘ very interesting and I enjoyed watching it!
At first i must say you did a very good job Katia. Your review is very comprehensibly. There is nothing to add for me. I agree with your opinions, Stefan and Katia, that this is a movie wich touch your heart. I also give the film 9 points because you get much informations about living in India and the movie catch you.
In my opinion, this is a very well done review. You understood the main parts of the film, but finally, you understood wrong, that the money plays a role for Jamal. He says, that he only takes part to find Latika. You also missed, that Jamal and Latika met in their past more times and their way crossed more often. But all in all, you expressed the film in a very understandable way. I could watch this film about 100 times, because, he never gets boring and you always understand more of the context.
