“2012” is a 2009 US- American science fiction disaster movie. The screenplay is written by Roland Emmerich and Harald Kloser. The main actors are John Cusack, who plays Jackson Curtis, the father of his two children, Lilly and Noah Curtis (James Liam and Lily Morgan). His ex- wife Kate Curtis, played by Amanda Peet, and her new spouse Gordon Silberman is played by Thomas McCarthy.Other important actors are Chiwetel Ejiofor as Adrian Helmsley, an American geologist, and Dr. Satnam Tsurutani, played by Jimi Mistry.
The plot of the movie tells us about the end of the world in the near future. Scientist Dr. Satnam Tsurutani discovers a strong temperature increase of the Earth's crust. He reports this to his friend and geologist Adrian Helmsley, who also works for the government. Calculations say that the Neutrino radiations are melting the Earth's core. This is followed by earthquakes, tsunamis and Volcanic eruptions. This means the destruction of the world. US- President starts a world conference and they decide to build arches, which should transport and rescue animals and people. But the problem is that not everyone of the citizen can pay for ticket, which costs one billion dollars. Parallel to this, the unsuspecting writer and driver Jackson Curtis is driving with his two children to Yellowstone National Park to go camping. On the first day, they go to a restricted area by mistake and are arrested by the military police together with Adrian Helmsley. While Helmsley is telling Jackson about what “happens” - that there are just investigations- emphasized that he knows him because of his written book. Later Jackson and his kids go back to the camping place, he hears on the radio station Yellowstone some things about the destruction of the world, and also about the history of the Maya calendar, which predicts the end of the world in 2012. After some time, Jackson meets the radio speaker, who tells him about the earth's destruction and the plan of the government to build arches in secret places to survive. Then suddenly more earthquakes start in California. So Katie asks Jackson to drive back home to see her children again. While driving back home, Jackson gets a call by his very rich Russian employer Karpov, where he has his second job as a driver, to drive his family to the airport. By some comments of Karpov's son, that they will survive and everybody will die, because of the earth's destruction. After so many events, Jackson gets sceptical and rents a plane. He calls Katie, Gordon, Lilly and Noah to come with him. With some support by the crazy radio presenter, they get the map, which shows where the arches would be. As they land to refuel, they meet Jacksons Boss Korpov with his family in Las Vegas, because of its destroyed plane. In the final second, Sasha, the pilot of the Russian family, organizes a plane to fly to China, where the arches are. At the same time, Helmsley flies to China by the “Air Force One” with the president's daughter and other politicians. The President Wilson remained at the white house. The movie shows a lot of earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions. The world is destroyed. The “Air Force One” lands in China at the arches. Helmsley and Laura get closer and get on to the huge ship. Parallel to this scene the fuel of Jackson's plane gets empty and crashes on a glacier, so Sasha dies. Shortly thereafter, Karpov and his family are taken by a helicopter, which takes the animals to the ship. Jackson, Gordon, Kate, the children and Karpov's girlfriend Tamara left at the glacier.
The background music supports the feelings of the people. But the music is also suitable to the destroying effects. It makes it more interesting and more lively. The actors fit perfectly in there roles. In my opinion, the movie gets 3 of 10 points, because it doesn't appear realistic and I think this is one of the most important aspects of a movie. The effects are too extremely shown. Also you can't empathize in the situations of the people. The idea of the film is very good, but it isn't good implemented.
Kristina, in my opinion you have sumed up the plot very well. There is nothing what i can add. But i give 9 points of 10 and i don't aggree that the film is extremly unrealistic. Ok, i little bit it is unrealistic, but not too much. One other point is, that i could empathize me in the situations of the peaople. I had a lots of emotions while watching it.
I LOVE THIS FILM! Especially because it‘s extremely unrealistic. I laughed so hard when I watched it I almost fell off my couch. It‘s totally over-done with action scenes, for example when they all get on the bigger plane and then the runway is too short and they fall down but somehow they can get back up again. However, that‘s not all. Just a few moments later there are two towers they have to fly between through by tilting the plane then there is another house they barely skim and then there‘s a reproduction of the Eiffel Tower which they touch but they are able to fly on anyway and then they run out of petrol before they get to where they want to go, but somehow they have almost reached it already anyway and then they crush and one sacrifices himself so the rest can survive and those of course are found immediately and get rescued. It‘s just so stupid! What a heap of clichés! I haven‘t laughed that hard for a while! It‘s awesome! Definitely worth 10 Points! LOOOOOL
