Into The Wild

  1. “Into the Wild”, directed By Sean Penn, is an adventure which is set in America at the end of the 20th century. Emile Hirsch is the main actor, already well-known from other films, and also Kristen Stewart a well-known actor from “Twilight”.
22-years-old Christopher McCandless (Emile Hirsch) has a dream. Even though he has just graduated from college, Christopher wants to travel to Alaska on his own, without any money or help, only himself in the wilderness. The young man doesn’t want to follow the future plans of his parents, so he starts his journey that nobody except his sister knows about. The money from his College fund which he doesn’t need, Christopher donates to a charity organization, and he also burns his credit card and other cards to feel really free. After he has lost his car because of a flood, he has to walk or hitch a ride to go on. His changing life style also causes a name change to Alexander Supertramp. However, when he arrives in Northern California, Alex meets a hippie couple, named Jan Burres (Catherine Keener) and Rainey (Brian Dierker), with whom he feels very close, but after one night with them the journey goes on. Weeks later, the traveler starts to earn some money at a farm to buy a kayak with which he paddles illegally down the Colorado River until he gets close to Mexico. From Mexico, Alex takes a train to the direction of Los Angeles. Confronted by modern civilization in this big city, he leaves very fast and meets Jan and Rainey at another city again. At this chapter of his trip Alex also meets Tracy Tatro (Kristen Stewart), a guitar playing and well-singing teenage girl, as a friend, but “too early” for all the others, he leaves again. While camping, he gets to know Ron Franz (Hal Holbrook), an old single man, and Alex can live with him for a few months and learns to work with leather. But despite the offer of Ron to adopt him, he goes further with a lot of gifts from the old man, like a gun to shoot animals. Months later he settles down in an old bus in the middle of the wilderness in Alaska. Quickly he realizes that living alone is very hard and “Happiness is only real when shared”. Step by step, Alex loses weight because there is not enough food for him, and with confusing two plants that he eats it comes to a disaster…
Very remarkable is the background music, which you can hear for almost the whole film while seeing beautiful landscapes, sun downs, or wild animals. Often it is a very melancholic, calm music, so you can feel with and understand Alex and his mood right away. For example, when he climbs a hill to have a fantastic view or takes a bath in the river, it is underlined with music. The background music is a very important element in this film, which underlines the plot and the feelings of the protagonists.
Another aspect of filmmaking, which should be discussed, is the acting. All actors do very well; Especially Christopher McCandless (Emile Hirsch) does a great job. He has to swim, hike, climb on rocky steep hills or hunt animals and this alone without the help of others. So you really believe in his story, and it never gets boring to watch him doing his normal daily activities.
In the end I’m very pleased that I watched this film. It pays to watch the whole 142 minutes and I would do it again. You can often feel very close to the protagonist and understand the feelings of Alex, so the film never gets boring. And a few times you really have to think about your life, only because of Alex’ thoughts or travel diary entries. So I would recommend this film and give it 9 of 10 points.

  2. In my opinion you have summarized the plot quite well.
The film ‘Into the Wild’ is inspired by Christopher McCandless (Emile Hirsch), a young man who abandons his life of comfort to pursue the freedom of life on the road. Like you have said, this plan leads him over Mexico, where he meets the (too) young teenager Tracy Tatro (Kristen Steward) who can sing and play the guitar very well. While camping in the wilderness, Alex (Christopher has changed his name) meets an old man called Ron Franz (Hal Holbrook). Ron teaches Alex a lot so after Alex settles down in the middle of Alaska it becomes clear that living own your own in the wilderness is very dangerous …
I can also agree with you that the acting and the background music are very remarkable. Whatever Alex does, the direction of the film (Sean Penn) has chosen the right music in order to underline Alex’ actions or to express his feelings. Your chosen example fits to this fact very well.
Although I like this film quite much, it would receive from me only 6 out of 10 points because the action (142 minutes) simply takes too much time. Hiking around the world and the wilderness can be nice, but in my opinion the film is based just on this one storyline. Don’t get me wrong, I really do like the idea of the film and the aspects of filmmaking, but I can ‘Into the Wild’ only recommend to people who have a long, long breath and don’t need too much action in a film.

  3. Your summery was quite well so I won’t to this again.
I really loved that film. I think the music was chosen brilliant. It’s always a calm music, often a man who sings along with only a guitar. Sometimes the text of the songs dealt with the situation Christopher McCandless or Alex Supertramp gets to use to.
Emilie Hirsch is a fantastic actor. You can notice his feelings easily while he is acting. And this role isn’t an easy job. He has to play all emotions, happiness, anger, disappointment, hope and more. But it always looks real.
I loved the film even it took 142 minutes. I like to watch films which are based on a real story. I would award him 9 or even maybe 10 points out of 10. This movie wasn’t just a movie. It made you think about your life and your lifestyle. You get part of this great adventure and when the film is finished I wanted to start watching again.
If you haven’t seen the film you should watch it, but now you shouldn’t read on because I want to say something about the end of the film.
It was one of the saddest films I ever seen. To be honest in the end I cried and cried, the film touched me. I don’t like films without a happy end, and this film had a dramatic and sad end. And at least the fact, that this is a real story. I couldn’t believe and it made me cry more, when the picture of the real Christopher McCandless was shown.
