Once

  1. In Dublin in summer, an unnamed busker (Glen Hansard), who plays his own songs on his guitar meets an unnamed Czech woman (Markéta Iglová) who passes him accidentally. She stops to listen to him and his quite emotional voice. After having a short conversation, they get to know each other better. So, when they work out that both have a passion for music, since the woman plays the piano and sings very well, they decide to create a demo-tape together with some other buskers.
During practicing their songs, the viewer hears their stories of their broken relation-ships which unites them in some way. So, they find out that you just once find the right person, as they are still in love with their ex-partners. By singing, both tell their love stories. That is a good way to show their feelings to the audience.

You can almost compare this movie with a musical because they tell the main story by singing. The music helps them in some way to process their lovesickness and makes their stories more sentimental, especially in the scene when the woman sings the song that she has dedicated to her hated husband, she actually still loves and needs as a Dad for her daughter. Or in the scene in the bus when the busker still mourns about his ex-girlfriend, who has found another guy she fell in love with. So, he calls himself a loser and decides to win her back.

You also get a little insight into Irish landscape. You see what the city looks like as well as the beautiful scenery and how immigrants live in their flats.
Especially in the scene when the busker invites her to make a tour with his Dad’s motorbike to the coast, the beautiful scenery is shown.

All in all, this is a heart-warming movie. It has an open ending, so you do not really know if both find their luck. It’s plot is very clear and uncomplicated to understand.
It is kept very close to reality and I really like this kind of songs, especially the two voices are really harmonic. Therefore, this movie also gained the Academy Award – Best original Song.

I can only recommend this movie especially for people who are lovesick, to show that life still goes on and that you are not alone with that problem. Inspite of their bad feelings, they keep being optimistic. That is one of the most significant messages, the movie transports.
This movie is rather made for girls, though I recommend it. (7 out of 10 points)

  2. I have to say that the person who wrote this summery of this movie did a great job! I totally agree that you should keep being optimistic even though you are sick of love because life goes on and it’s better to look forward instead of looking back to the past and feeling sad. The actors in the movie show you that you can be happy too although you are sick of love and haven’t the best standards of living. It is your life and you should do things which make you happy!
I like this kind of movie very much. But I found the ending a little bit strange because it was an abrupt ending and you don’t really know how the story goes on. Apart from the strange ending it is a great movie and I recommend on you to watch it.

  3. The plot of the film “Once” is summarized a bit short, but still OK. Like the first review tells us, “Once” is the inspirational tale of two kindred spirits who find each other on the bustling streets of Dublin. One of them is a street musician (Glen Hansard) who lacks the confidence to perform his own songs. The other is a young Czech mother (Markéta Iglová) trying to find her way in a strange new town. Over a period of a few days, they get closer and closer and discover together their talents and dreams…
I really do like the way Glen Hansard and Markéta Iglová fulfilled their roles. In some scenes, e. g. when the musician and the mother get to know each other, I did not even think of two actors just standing on the street and trying to do their job well, no way- the viewer gets the feeling to be in real life. It is so brilliant and emotional!
Although love stories are actually not my case (the first reviewer is right, girls like to watch this kind of films more than boys), I have to recommend this film to EVERYONE who wants to watch perfect acting that fits together really well. So “Once” receives from me 9 out of 10 points.
